his jaw quivered. He reached for the cover, and she stopped
him. He glared at her.
"No. Mr. Webber, you don't want to remember her like
that. Remember her face, her beauty. The good times." She
swallowed. "I'll give you a few minutes alone."
Outside the door, she turned in time to see him hunched
over the body of his wife, shoulders wracked with sobs. A
nurse brought the baby down, and she took him, needing to
hold life in her arms for a bit.
Tiffie found a chair and sat down while waiting for the
father to leave the room. She held Al close to her and allowed

the smell of baby and innocence to flow over her, helping to
ebb the emotions of the day.
When Tim Webber exited the room, she rose to meet him.
His manner was subdued as he accepted his son from her
then he walked away, lost in his own misery.
Tired, Tiffie walked to the desk and stopped when Grace
waved at her. She leaned against the edge. "What's up?"
"This was dropped off for you. The EMT's brought it in."
She handed over a plastic baggie with her cell phone in it.
"They gave me a shirt, but it was so full of blood I figured you
didn't want it anymore."
"Thanks, Grace. Do you have the names on the others who
were brought in for this?"
"Just a sec."
Grace was true to her word and in a few moments she
stared at a list which thankfully didn't have Jesse's name
on it.
"No one was sent anywhere else?"
"Not that I heard, no. Sorry your day off was ruined."
"Me too." Tiffie gave her a smile and waved as she headed
for the door.
Out front, the same EMT who'd ridden in the back with her
stood there, about to climb into the front.
"Hey. Hey!" she hollered, jogging over to his door.
He glanced at her, a grin spreading across his dark skin.
"Doc Carver, did you get your phone?"
"I did, thanks."
"Sorry to hear she didn't make it."
"Thanks. What are you doing back here?"

"We dropped a car accident victim off. Did you need
something?"
She nodded. "Actually, yes, I did, and I was wondering if
y'all could help me out."

"Mason!"
Jesse glanced up from the papers in his hand. "What,
Mahoney?"
"You have a visitor. In my office."
Lewis Mahoney was a detective who had his own private
office in the precinct. Jesse didn't want a visitor. He wanted to
find out what the hell happened with Tiffie. I never should
have left her.
He'd chased after the perp and had just taken him down
when more shots rang out. Shots back in the direction he'd
left Tiffie. By the time he made it back up there, cops had
descended upon the place, and all he could get was Tiffie had
been taken away in an ambulance.
His calls to her cell went unanswered, and his captain
wouldn't let him leave until everything got taken care of. So
now that he'd just crossed the last "t" and dotted the final "i"
he wanted nothing more than to get the hell out of dodge.
And find Tiffie.
"You hear me, man?" Mahoney asked, snapping his fingers
in front of his face. "My office."
"I heard you. Thanks."
Tossing the papers in the proper folder on his desk, Jesse
trotted off to Mahoney's office. The door was open, and he

reached out to knock on the frame when he caught sight of
who the visitor was.
Tiffie stood there, offering him a side profile, while she
stared out the window over the city skyline at something only
she could see. A wave of relief hit him, and he breathed a bit
easier. She was okay. He had hoped she would have called
him, but the disappointment she hadn't faded now, seeing her
before him.
Her shirt had blood on it as did her pants. He stepped into
the room and shut the door behind him, locking it. The click
brought her head around, and he could see the exhaustion in
her eyes.
"Tiffie," he said.
There was no hesitation on her part. She ran to him and
threw her arms around him. "Are you okay?" she asked. "I
tried to call, but I couldn't get through to you."
Holding her trembling body close, he nodded. "My cell was
in the truck. I'm fine." His hand on her head sank deep into
her smooth, silken hair. Hair which had been up in a ponytail
earlier now hung freely around her. "Are you?"
"Physically yes. I couldn't save her, Jesse."
He drew back and stared down into her eyes. They shone
with unshed tears. "Couldn't save who?"
"The woman, Abigail Webber. I tried. I tried, but I just
couldn't save her." Raw agony poured from her throat.
There were no words he could offer so he just drew her in
tight to him. She allowed the contact for a few until she
pulled away. Tiffie stepped back, and he scowled over the
distance she put between them.

"I thought I told you to stay put," he said, his concern for
her rising anew with the continual sight of dried blood on her
shirt.
"You did. But just like you didn't stay there and let an on
duty cop chase down the guy, neither could I stand around
and watch her bleed to death."
"Damn it, Tiffie! Do you know how worried I was when I
got back up there and all I got was you left in an ambulance
covered in blood?" He clenched his fists and rocked on his
heels.
Her eyes lost their sorrow and snapped with blazing fire. "I
guess about the same I was. Not knowing if you were hit,
alive, or...or dead!" Her voice lurched on that last word and
spurred him into action.
He lunged toward her and caught her up in his embrace.
Hungrily, he dominated her mouth, demanding her
submission to his kiss. His tongue thrust into the warmth and
stroked everywhere he could reach. He couldn't get enough of [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
