been sure was the end of the world.
"These things happen?" she got out on a gurgle.
"Aye. I am forever splitting the seams on my tunics. Diamanda has made me one for every birthday and
Christmas since she came to train with my mother, but she makes them too small in the shoulders. They
are fine whilst I am at rest, but the mo-, ment I take up my sword and flex my muscles, the damn things
rip wide open." He shrugged again. "Hardly worth worrying over."
His gaze slid over her now in the red gown, and Avelyn bit her lip, afraid that without the binding he
would be displeased. She was doing her best not to flinch when he announced, "You look much better
now. There is color in your cheeks, and you are no longer all sucked up and fishy looking."
"Fishy looking?" Avelyn gasped with dismay.
"Aye." When he pursed his lips and sucked his cheeks in to show her how she'd looked, Avelyn felt
herself flush again. She hadn't realized how ridiculous she'd appeared. And she had imagined herself
looking better! Then she noticed with some unease that he had begun to frown. He was displeased with
his bride after all, she thought with distress. Avelyn was all prepared for him to verbalize his displeasure
when he stepped forward and reached for her hair. Within seconds he had tugged out the thong Runilda
had just begun to put in.
"You have lovely hair. I like it better down. You shall wear it down for me," he announced with a nod,
then snatched tip her hand and strode toward the door. Avelyn tripped after him, beaming over her
shoulder at her parents, Lady Gerville, Gunnora and Runilda.
"He likes my hair. I must wear it down for him. Remember that, Runilda," she cried, then was out in the
hall and running to keep up with her husband's much longer steps. Much to her relief, Paen stopped at
the top of the stairs. He turned as if to speak, then suddenly frowned as he caught sight of her flushed and
breathless state.
Avelyn forced her gaping, gasping mouth closed and sucked air in through her nose. She would not
normally have been so out of breath from this little jog, but suspected she had still not fully recovered
from the binding.

"I am sorry, wife. I forget you are such a little thing. I must get used to measuring my steps to yours."
"Little?" Avelyn nearly wept at the word. No one hadever called her little.
"Aye. Well, not as scrawny as most women, thank God. I should fear your getting ill, or my crushing
you, were that the case. Fortunately, you are well rounded and have some meat on your bones, so I will
not lose you in the linens. But you are still much smaller than I, and I shall have to learn to walk slower
with you."
Paen was busy drawing her hand through his arm as he spoke, so she knew he was not aware of the
many expressions that flew across her face. Avelyn was not sure how she should feel after this
proclamation. Well rounded and with some meat on her bones did not sound all that complimentary, but
at least he did not seem repulsed. Before she could decide if he was genuinely pleased with her or was
just making the best of things, he had finished anchoring her to his side and started down the stairs.
Avelyn was fine for the first few steps, but then the great hall came into view with the trestle tables and
celebrating throng, and she began to slow. Paen noticed at once and was quick to guess the reason for it.
"You are not to fear your cousins," he ordered. "They shall not trouble you again."
Her gaze slid over his firm expression curiously, but she did not question him on how he could assure
that. Instead she took a deep breath and stayed close to her new husband as they entered the hall. The
silence that fell over the tables as their return was noted was discomfiting. Avelyn felt herself flush and
very much feared she was most definitely resembling that cherry in her red gown. As she took her seat at
the trestle table, she cast a nervous glance in the direction of her three cousins, but they were silent, eyes
fastened firmly on their trenchers. It appeared they would not bother her again, she realized with
something close to awe, and had to wonder how Paen had managed it. No amount of threats or beatings
by Warin or her father had achieved it, yet somehow in just a few moments before chasing upstairs after
her, Paen had managed to silence the terrible trio.
That realization made Avelyn peer at her new husband with eyes shining with gratitude. Not that he
seemed to notice. He was busy filling the trencher they were sharing with fresh food. Avelyn watched
with renewed amazement as he piled it on until it was a heaping mountain of food.
Avelyn was just fretting over the possibility that he had concluded from her size that she must eat like a
pig, when she was distracted by the return of her parents and Lady Gerville. She smiled at them all a little [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
